Opening Our Doors and Our Hearts

On July 1, the Mandell JCC reopened the building, ‘joyfully’ welcoming back a community who has actually been with us all along.

“It has been so wonderful to get back to a “normal” routine,” says JCC member, Art.

While the JCC continued to offer its fitness classes virtually, seeing the members in-person has been incredibly special to our fitness staff. JCC Group Fitness Director, Carmen Erian, shares that “we are so grateful to our members for following all the guidelines and being respectful of the staff and other members. It has been an almost seamless reopening.” JCC Fitness Director, Farrah Mead, added that “it’s so nice to see the smiles behind those masks.”

The reopening followed countless hours of preparation and training by our staff and leadership team. With the State of Connecticut and Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) guidelines changing rapidly, the JCC made sure every safety measure and precaution was in place so that our members felt confident and safe in their return to the J. “I’m so impressed with the dedication of the JCC staff to make sure all CDC guidelines are in place and being followed,” says JCC member, Rise Roth.

“I’m so impressed with the personal training workstations,” says one JCC personal training client. “The JCC did an amazing job, and I am so grateful to be back working with Kathy, getting my training in and not worrying about my safety.”

JCC Director of Personal Training, Kathy Armstrong-Crouch, reflects, “I don’t think we fully realized how special the return to the J was going to be. The way our community stood by us during this time is a testament to just how fortunate we are; they are so much more than members … they truly are our family.”

“At first, we really weren’t sure what it would look like at The Swim & Tennis Club,” says longtime JCC & The Swim & Tennis Club member, Lori Remington, “but we couldn’t be more impressed with how organized everything has been. Of course, the club looks different this year, but Sara Billings and her staff have really gone above and beyond to make sure our summer experience is fun and safe.”

“The Mandell JCC has always stood for community,” says David Jacobs, “and these unprecedented times have revealed our mission at its best and demonstrated that we truly are strongest together. Our community has reminded us that the JCC is so much more than a building. We are thankful now more than ever for our magnificent JCC and the many things we can offer our community.”
